Friday Vidcast 1.29.10

In this week’s vidcast I am discussing if we really understand social media, and what it is, and even more so what it isn’t. Yes this may seem a bit of a rant… but at the same time I am hoping that it will open up some good dialog.

Good message. I totally agree. My solution is to set up a local Social Media Club in your area. We have one in my small city of Missoula and that is where the power of social media exists. It’s when you actually meet face to face with those you meet online. Not saying you need to meet everyone face to face online, but we do have video chat and cell phones. Physically call up and meet ppl you jive with online. It’s huge! Start collaborating on the big projects and start brain storming! Get to know these ppl!

  2. Very well put Aaron. Social Media is a buzz word that can be tossed around a lot sometimes. It’s about the connection to the client and how you can embrace there business in a busy digital world. A lot of these business owners just LOVE doing what they do best. Which is there business, whether it’s carpet cleaning or accounting. They don’t have time or don’t make time to learn and master this digital realm.

great vid this week. i personally forget about the importance of true interaction and get caught up in the RT game. social media is a great way for us to grow through interaction and feedback from others and often times we miss the boat. its just like any friendship, we need to spend time with each other to further those relationships and not just forward on links. it is nice to pass along each other’s links and try to spread the word, but it being social goes far beyond that.

    • Rich Hemsley says:

i wanted to add that it social media for businesses should go beyond “brand promotion” as well. when organizations build personal relationships with consumers/clients, they are building a lasting customer base. good customer relations is a leading cause for repeat business. if an organization seems out of touch personally, consumers/clients will feel that and reciprocate with a similar response.

rich – i feel like im getting off track with some of the somed i use too! i’ve been SO BUSY the lst 3 weeks or so i feel like i have had total tweeters block. i just feel a little anti-social… but when i push myself to reach out to my community (have been the last couple days more) i feel SO MUCH better!

        Nice words Aaron!

Valid rant, I often wonder if sites like Facebook are more harmful than beneficial. It does help me stay in contact with people, but it’s shallow at best. No long conversations, just little comments here and there, 1 sentence posts about how much work sucks, and pics of their latest trip to Vegas. Basically, stuff I don’t really care about.

Guys and gals. Start a Social Media Club in your area. I’m not a spokesman for the company or do I have a money affiliation with them. I have seen the benefit. It is something that is easy to start and they hook you up with a platform and a name brand that you can run with.

Here’s our SMCMissoula club website. It’s just a Ning site, but this group has been a huge gift to my business. http://www.smcmissoula.com

Also, here is the main smc site for more info. Highly recommend it! We meet every month and it’s always productive.

Really great message. I am up in LA and I have been meaning to look into more groups like this around the city. Maybe I’ll head down to the Temucula one next time y’all meet up.

Great post Aaron! I have always told my clients and often need to remind myself that social media doesn’t exist without social interaction. The outlets to connect to people are available everywhere but if we’re not using them to interact and share knowledge on a personal level than it’s we lose the whole social aspect of it.

I love that you mention the RT swaps. I am definitely guilty of that one! Not that it’s not good to pass on the reference but it’s easy to forget that information sharing strive and builds off other’s peoples opinions and advice. If we feel the need to share why not send some input as well.

I think Tim’s advice is great! Get out and meet up with locals in your area. Share knowledge face to face or visually via chats. Collaborate and conversing with people while seeing them always you to gain a more personal relationship.

Once again great post man! Have a great weekend!!

  8. Great message!!! Honestly, I had not thought about social media that way. You are on the ball in stating being social media has been around forever. We are just giving it a “title” via all these new tools. I agree the RT game is getting old and we need to be more personal.

  9. Thanks everyone for watching the vid and interacting. We can get all caught up in the brevity of social interaction… I do all the time. I think that if we make a consistent effort to interact past simple retweets, and #ff’s twitter, and likes on facebook we can recommend, give input, feedback, and words of encouragement.

This would ad so much value to the people we interact with, and be very rewarding to us as we build relationships, collaborate, and make progress personally and professionally.

I once heard community defined as…

“A group of people that helps you get to places you could not go on your own.”

Awesome subject Aarron! I met @Tanyaahedo (another Soc Media consultant) on twiitter, then in person for lunch and shopping and we stumbled onto a Soc Media project that she and I can team up on and take to the streets and get businesses to engage with. Good thing can happen when you meet other Soc Media Stars!

  12. Aaron this is my favorite vid cast thus far!
