Friday Vidcast 10-16-09

This weeks Friday Vidcast discusses the type of clients and work we take, and making sure that we are realistic with out expectations…

I think it is crucial as we look at our project load, and pursue clients that we be realistic with our expectations as well as making sure we take the right type of clients to achieve certain goals.

Also make sure you wish @richhemsley a happy b-day today… he turns the big 30! w00t!

Thanks again to all of you who continue to come and interact… you make every bit of the effort put into this site well worth it.

Very timely post (again) for what’s going on in my life. My 9-5 pays the bills. but my contract work allows me to be selective and work on the projects I want to work on. There is nothing worse that staying up late and weekends on projects that are not satisfying.

Good advice, I find I am doing less and less of these “bread and butter” project as time goes on… but in the start, it was a *must*, I’d suggest people getting a toe hold on freelancing to consider getting on a short-term contract position, this allows you good money, but more freedom than a staff position. I did this for the whole 1st year of freelancing.

I consider myself pretty lucky to have these bread and butter projects. They are not always what I would label exciting work and sometimes you could even call then mind numbing, but it’s still nice to know that they are always going to be there. Nothing I enjoy more than seeing a full project through from start to finish. Having these bread and butter projects in between allows me to be a bit more selective in the projects I take, spend more quality time on those projects and feel less burdened by the bills that need to be paid. Sometimes it’s just nice to have these things to break up the flow when a larger project gets too heavy. Like you mentioned, it’s all about creating a balance, for me it’s a balance that keeps work interesting/exciting which in turn motivates me to accomplish the things that need to be done.

    I suggest a 2 minute vid rule.
If you were to write a post, i would have read it in half the time it took to watch this video. time is money baby.
