Aaron, great post vidcast today. I had not seen the new fuelbrandinc.com site either, very impressive. I think in your discussion you bring up some great points. I think as creatives we all have to explore outside our boundaries, try stuff for ourselves and not just clients. Your point about students using sites like themeforest.net to develop custom stuff as a way to improve their skill I think is great. I also think for those of us who have been out in the field for a while (freelance or inhouse) need to do stuff like that as well. Just to keep our sanity and creative fire burning.
Thanks Aaron.
Good insight Jake, Thanks for watching and commenting.
I think when it comes to usability, we forget that we study it to provide better experience for our users(not ourselves).
So Fuel did well in my opinion by showing their skills even at the risk of being over done.
It is also important to remember that when it comes to usability, and the visual quality of a site or design, it can be easy to inject opinion as truth, which can be dangerous since it is based on our own experience with the site.
one of my ideas for 2010 was to offer an ebook off my blog… basically pick out some of my best freelance geared posts and elaborate on them to make a sort of “year in the life of a freelancer” type deally bomb. Probably just sell the PDF download for maybe a few dollars… I’m sad the title I want to use has already been taken my Michelle Goodman “My so called Freelance life”

That is a great idea… just come up with a new name… I think it would be a valuable resource.
I have something similar that I have been planning.
Do it!
Great vid Aaron. I love the point you make about creating something to promote yourself as an in house or freelancer, whether it be expanding your blog into a book, or creating custom themes and selling them on themeforest. I think that is the best way to really getting your name out there and showing what you’re capable of to fellow designers and potential clients alike. I currently have a custom theme in production on top of juggling a few contracts. You need to create time to both promoting yourself, as well as doing the work for your clients.
I totally agree Casey, We have to find time to design for ourselves… It will not only help us to promote ourselves, but to keep our sanity.
Hey Aaron – only just got round to watching this, you make a great point about the target audience which makes a lot of sense!
Respect for the article, I will add up this site to my rss feeds, my roomie just stated to me about this just last week. gracias again
