Friday Vidcast 8-21-09

The Friday Vidcast this week focuses on being willing to adapt to our environment as designers and developers, knowing that in our ever changing landscape of the interwebs we may have to expand our skill sets and be willing to take new roles, learn new platforms, and face new challenges.

Site of the Week

The site of the week is John O’Nolan’s site that has a great article about The worlds best web designers being unknown. It is definitely worth a read. You can read the article here.

Food for Thought

The food for thought this week touches on seizing opportunities as designers that may seem outside of our skill set or “what we do”. With an upside down economy, and the web design world always taking new turns, it will benefit us to remain open minded about our opportunities.

Wrapping Up

I want to send a special shout out to the Drifting Creative guys for hanging out this last week and sharing their experiences with us at our Collekt meet up.

I also want to send some follow love to Dave Stolte a talented illustrator I had the chance to meet this last week at our creative meet up. Check out his site here.

  2. Hey Aaron, I’ve connected with you a couple of times – most recently in the chat room for the first Chat Creative panel (I was the one who complimented your tats! mine: )

Just wanted to say that it’s an honour to be referenced as your site of the week, and I’m really glad that my article resonated with so many people!

Hope to connect with you much more in the future!

  3. This is a great post. I agree that the designers in our industry need to constantly be adapting. I think it becomes really hard for any of us to be a master of one skill set because of the constant evolution of web languages, trends, etc. I feel like I’ve had to become a Jack of Trades type guy too just to be even still on top of the skills I already have. I think it’s a tough balance of being current with what’s happening in our industry and still focusing on mastering a skill set.

Thanks for pointing out the article that John Nolan wrote. It’s makes some great points about the true “great” designers. Like you said it’s about the passion and what we can deliver to our clients. My personal philosophy is to always try and outdo the last project I did, regardless of budget or time. I treat every project in this way. It’s satisfying to me as a designer that I’m not getting stuck in a rut and it’s satisfying to my clients because they know I’ve given their project the appropriate time and respect.

Great post. Looking forward to next Friday!

  4. Great post! and now I have some new people to follow!

  5. Aaron, great vid-cast today. I can’t agree more with you when it comes to the “Food for Thought” part of the post. It’s my belief and it’s my driving force that comfort is a designers worst enemy and it always seems when I’m getting comfortable with what I do my work begins to suffer. I guess that’s why I find it so nice working in such a non-design minded state like Wyoming. I have to work hard to convince my clients (who are all business people) that design is important to the success of their business and once I do the pressure is on to prove my point, I love every minute of it.

    Thanks again Aaron.
