Moving Forward by Thinking Forward

Hello to everyone out there! I’d like to take a brief second to introduce myself if you don’t know who I am. My name is Patrick Algrim, I am a designer, and entrepreneur. I own a small design studio in Chicago called P41 Studios. I must warn you, the following article may inspire eureka. If you don’t want to think, please do not continue.

In this article I wanted to talk a little bit about personal integrity, value, and both of their impacts on humans. Aaron initially contacted me because he was interested in the idea behind The Mindset Game. The website was actually started by my brother and it soon turned into something I found to be very inspiring. I found it inspiring because the general theory behind helping others has been something I have been actively involved in for a long time.

Let’s start from the beginning, but not the design beginning or my beginning, but further back in history. Let’s actually start with Socrates. He attempted to spark change in others by illuminating rational thinking through logic and belief. This idea became the Socratic Method that we all know of, but was soon placed into a negative manner through Aristotle’s ethical mindset. Jacob Bernoulli attempted to create an equation that would estimate how humans behave. But Bernoulli didn’t think about the impact that impure actions may have on others, resulting in a skewed equation. Dan Gilbert gives the idea that humans always think more is always better, and now is definitely better than later. But Gilbert gets distraught about the idea that value isn’t as important as it should be in the way humans behave. All of these men attempted to transcribe human interaction and the idea of why we choose to make certain actions.

It’s been my journey in life to learn. I realized soon that it’s been my true passion to unveil new information. One thing I have found to make the largest impact on myself is learning about the real goals of companies and of people. I am not talking about the goals the person or the business tells you, but the goals you have to assume they truly have. The goals they don’t tell you. While, it’s best to assume the good in people, which 85% of the time I do as a positive minded person. You must realize that through the ideas that Socrates and Bernoulli attempted to solve, that you as a person have the power to disassemble a set of attributes that will lead you to a final opinion of anything.

Personally, I have learned to empower these thoughts and have been applying them to my business and myself for a long period of time. As a designer, I choose not to work with others who have impure goals for a community.  These decisions lead to an ultimate value in what I do, and the work I have done. I would rather have a small group of fans that have been impacted by what I have said rather than be loved by everyone because I have a truck full of money.

But the important part of this is the value you have in yourself and what you do.

You can’t stop others’ actions, but you as a person have the power to value what you do, and inspire yourself. You don’t need a publication; you don’t need a crafted individual, or even a motivational speaker. You have the ability to make your own decisions and the opportunity to do anything you wish. Don’t underestimate that power. Hopefully, if we all thought this way, our momentum as individuals and as a race should become perpetual.

Thank you!

  2. Aaron, thanks so much for letting write this article!

@izzat — It’s very true, what you are doing is basically preparing yourself for a new milestone. Just by undergoing that idea your telling yourself that you will do better than you did before. We all need to do it to move forward somehow. Asking ourselves serious questions is the best thing we could do, and sometimes the hardest. Your doing great! :)

  3. good article – would like to hear more discussion on the title and hear people examples of success through helping others- this kind of thinking gets lost so often in the rush for success today – wish you success in your moving forward

  4. A very well written article. People are much stronger than they think. It takes a lot to wipe clean all the insecurity’s in a person. But getting those insecurity’s out is the only way to open up the mind and become your own person. Some people get it others don’t, its a long road and I’ve just begone.

  6. Life is a very long road to travel and insecurity can just make it a horrible trip. I know it’s something I’ve battled with and will continue to do so.
