User Behavior Tools

I am knee deep in front end user interface design right now. So I have been parousing the interwebs lately looking for user testing apps, and other tools to aide in  the process.

The cool doodes over at northtemple were talking about this app

Userfly

userfly.com from Chris Estreich on Vimeo.

This is what they had to say…
“userfly.com, a startup that launched about 3 months ago, is a new way to study user behavior on your site. The service lets you record your site’s users’ actions and then play them back in your own browser. You are able to see exactly what people are doing, which includes mouse clicks, keystrokes (except for those in password fields for obvious security reasons), page scrolling and navigation across multiple pages. Everything happens as if you’re browsing the site yourself, except the actions you see follow another user’s recorded session.”

A while back the ever so user friendly gang over at UXBooth were talking about this app

Silverback

This is how they use it (for more feedback read their review here)

At the UXBooth we’ve used Silverback in a more or less “solo” way. When a site is in the queue to be reviewed, we will each review for the site in a 15-20 minute session, recorded using Silverback. This enables us to have an archive of our first visit to sites and how we explore them.

Of course, this approach also has its caveats: we don’t run through (or for that matter prepare) a script of any kind before we visit a site—that’s kind of the point of the review, though. Most of our Silverback sessions are fairly simple: we don’t set chapter markers and we don’t really have need for the notes or “click-tracking” bits of the software. Although this means that our use of Silverback is a touch limited, we have had a chance to get a feel for one of many use cases.

I also came across these two apps;

ClickTale

Crazy Egg

These are just a few of the apps I have found, I am sure there are more out there, as I test these out I will provide some feedback as to what was most useful in which situations.

What has your experience been with any of these apps? Know of any other useful tools? Fill us in :)

Great stuff again, thanks Aaron. I like Userfly a lot so far. I think it’s definitely a valuable tool for user behavior. I’m anxious to hear what you think about the others.

    Aaron,
another tool worth having a look at is Loop11 (www.Loop11.com). They recently launched in private beta. Looks like another great UX tool.

I use both of those as often as time permits. I love them, though userfly adds come JS hiccups on some sites.

Knowing how your users are behaving on your sites is invaluable information. I recommend using any resource you can.

Oh, and userfly was up in February.
